It's a weekend for celebrating Earth and our place in the Universe.

Saturday, April 21, marks Astronomy Day, a celebration of space, and Sunday, April 22, marks Earth Day, in honor of our home planet.

A lot of celebrations are already planned for Earth Day, and there are many things you can do around your own house to honor and care for our planet.

Astronomy Day is the less well-known holiday this weekend. Here are a couple ideas on how to mark the occasion:

  • Observe the night sky. A meteor shower reaches its height this weekend, bright Venus and other planets are great targets, or try for the new comet in morning skies.
  • If it's cloudy and you can't observe the night sky overhead, visit your local planetarium for a sky show and some educational information.
  • Check local observatories in your area for public observing times. Many of them will be celeberating Astronomy Day with special events.
  • Head to the library and find a new book on astronomy. There are different subjects within astronomy to suit everyone's tastes, from physics of the universe to exploration of the planets to observing guides and more.
  • Buy a subscription to an astronomy magazine. When you are done reading it each month, pass it on to a friend or donate it to your local library.
  • Invest in a pair of binoculars or the telescope you have been dreaming about.
  • Share the sky with a child, a friend, or your neighbors. Teach them the constellations, tell them about the meteor shower this weekend, or give them a glimpse of the moon through your telescope.

What other ways can you find to celebrate Astronomy Day?
